Dharma vs. Discipline and How to Live Your Purpose

You want to know my secret, my Dharma, my superpower? SELF-LOVE.

Comparing ourselves to others, we think we need “discipline” to achieve our desires. This belief does not come from a place of self-love. When we move from the power of self-love, a natural shift begins to happen; new energy emerges. We begin to nurture our soul and spirit, operating at a higher frequency. We learn to listen to our heart and trust our intuitive knowing. Our purpose begins to drive our actions, and we show up to life in a very different way. Listen to your heart and let it guide you to live your purpose — Dharma — rather than feel you need to improve your “sense of discipline,” and see how you begin to show up in your life.

Self Love: No More Beating Myself Up and Lovin’ the Skin I’m In

I ran to be skinny. When we deprive ourselves or become rigid in our food and/or exercise regime, it is often to feel 'in control' when so much of life feels out of control. And most of the time when we are depriving ourselves, the motivation comes from a place of lack, when we think to ourselves: "I am not good enough"; "I am fat"; "I am ugly"; "When I’m skinny, I will be lovable".

The journey to self-love and feeling comfortable in our own skin begins with perceiving our body in a curious, gentle and loving way: appreciating the power, beauty and life in our flesh and bones, experiencing the energy and subtleties and embracing our imperfections. This requires a conscious awareness: quieting the negative chatter, experiencing the virtue and wonderment of the body and shifting our thoughts and motivations away from the external.

Video: Setting Healthy Boundaries - Maintaining a Sense of Self and Creating Healthy Relationships

"Love can't exist without boundaries, even with your children. If you have difficulty saying "No", override your needs to please others, or are bothered by someone who is demanding, controlling, criticizing, pushy, abusive, invasive, or even smothering you with kindness, it's your responsibility to speak up." Setting boundaries is critical to increasing self-esteem, reducing stress, anxiety, depression and is one of the most vital components to creating healthy relationships. Clearly communicating your boundaries, you are telling others how you want and expect to be treated. "Boundaries are a part of self-love and self-care. They are healthy, normal and necessary."

Video: Living Authentically

“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” Brene Brown

Many of us don’t live authentically because we hide so much of ourselves due to fear and shame. When we acknowledge and embrace all parts of ourselves - the good and bad  - we become whole. There is no shame. It is a loving self-understanding that we are human, welcoming all of our human frailties and strengths. We can then show up authentically, speaking and living our truth and know that our shadow - the things we hide - are part of our beauty and our resilience.
